A STARTING POINT, NOT A SCRIPT

Words you can make your own.

Replace the details with what actually happened. Keep only promises you can follow through on.

I understand you may need some space. I will respect that, and I will follow through on what I have written whether or not you reply today.

01

A letter structure you can actually use

Address her naturally. In the first paragraph, identify the incident rather than beginning with a long speech about your pain. In the second, explain the impact you understand. In the third, offer a repair and a manageable change. End by respecting her choice about whether and when to respond.

02

Complete example: not listening

Dear [name], I am sorry for the way I responded when you told me you felt unsupported. I interrupted you and treated your concern as an accusation. That was unfair. You were trying to share something important, and I made you defend it. I cannot rewrite that conversation, but I can change how I approach the next one. I will put my phone away and hear you out before explaining my point of view. If you want to tell me what I missed, I am willing to listen. You do not need to answer this letter immediately. With care, [your name].

03

What to leave out of a long apology

Do not include a list of every nice thing you have done for her. That turns the letter into a transaction. Avoid describing your sleepless nights as a reason she must forgive you. Keep private information about other people out of the letter. If you include context, make clear that it does not excuse your choice.

04

Read, edit and choose the right channel

Take a break before reviewing your draft. Underline each actual commitment and ask whether you can keep it. If she prefers a direct text, a long public letter may be uncomfortable. A personal card or website is optional; the format should serve her comfort rather than your desire for a grand gesture.

FROM WORDS TO ACTION

Before you send it.

  1. 01

Write one sentence naming the incident.

  2. 02

Explain the impact in her terms.

  3. 03

Describe a concrete repair and future habit.

  4. 04

Edit out excuses, bargaining and repeated requests.

A LITTLE MORE CLARITY

Questions worth asking.

How long should an apology letter be?

There is no ideal word count. A few focused paragraphs are usually more useful than several pages repeating the same feelings.

Can I use an apology letter after a serious mistake?

A letter can acknowledge the mistake, but it does not restore trust by itself. Repair takes consistent behavior and respect for the other person’s decisions.

A THOUGHTFUL NEXT STEP

You don’t need perfect words.
You need honest ones.

Take what is useful. Add your truth. Let your next actions support the apology.

Create Your Sorry Forgiveness is their choice. Taking responsibility is yours.
